Love, Persuasion and Lashings of Ginger Beer: A Literary Guide to Discovering Dorset

From Austen to Wodehouse, Blyton to Hardy, Dorset’s stunning countryside has

inspired some of Britain’s most prominent literary names with its scenic, almost

ineffable landscapes igniting the imagination which has affected these authors

in various ways. Take a stroll with us (in no particular order) as we lead you through

a literature lover’s guide to discovering these authors’ works and all the pleasures

Dorset has.

Jane Austen

Jane Austen inspired by Dorset's landscape

Persuasion:  This historic title takes place around the Lyme Regis area which

many call “Pearl of Dorset” but more commonly known as Jurassic Coast which

is also a world heritage site and the title itself is Austen’s final novel which was

published shortly after her death in 1817. Austen visited Lyme Regis in 1803 and

1804, having stayed for weeks throughout that time which were later the setting

for the book. The popularity of this title led to an overflow of fans to the town in

which many of the events take place. Why not immerse yourself in the footsteps

of Austen and take a walk on the Cobb, have a weekend trip or drive along the Coast

where you can still find pre-historic fossils along the way to experience what she did

which left such a lasting impression that it was captured so eloquently within her

final novel.

Thomas Hardy

Thomas Hardy inspired by Dorset's landscape

Tess of the D’Urbervilles:  Initially this appeared as a censored and serialised version

which was published by the British illustrated newspaper (The Graphic) in 1891;

and later in book form which spanned three volumes. For many, this novel

represented Hardy’s literary/fictional masterpiece which challenged the sexual

morals of the Victorian era. All of Hardy’s novels are inspired by the South and

South West areas of England which he named Wessex, after the medieval

Anglo-Saxon kingdom that existed in this area of England prior to the unification

of Athelstan. The Vale of Blackmore, is also the main setting for Tess  and is a

short stones’ throw away from Stonehenge. Tess herself is seen as a representation

of nature and her affiliation with animals throughout the novel which impressed

and fascinated the reader of the “idea” or representation of the South and how

it inspired the events that took place. Like many before and after Hardy, the

beauty of the South is ideally conveyed and reinforces the plots of the novels.

www.dolesashfarm.co.uk offers self catering accommodation in the heart of

Dorset and features as Flintcomb Ash in Tess of the D’urbervilles.

Enid Blyton

Enid Blyton inspired by Dorset's landscape

Famous Five:  “The Famous Five” is a series of children’s novels written by author

Enid Blyton who went by the name of Mary Pollock within some of her published

works. The novels feature the adventures of a group of young children and their

dog and typically find themselves stumbling upon an adventure which usually

involves criminals and treasure. Oftentimes, these excursions they find themselves

in are close to Georgina/George’s family home which is based in Dorset. Regardless

of the book, many times the settings themselves take place in rural areas which

were directly inspired by the area of Dorset. Though there was only originally going

to be six/eight within the series, the popularity and sales of the books grew

tremendously to the point that in the end, twenty-one “Famous Five” novels were

written as well as several television and film adaptations based on the novels. Enid

Blyton is considered to be one of the world’s best selling authors since the 1930s

having sold in excess of 600 million copies. This series of books itself will capture

the imagination in what it was like as a child to discover idealistic, remote locations

such as these which made reading these books engaging, leaving the reader to

reminisce on the days we all had a group of friends with a dog having your own

adventures. For those wishing to really re-live the days of childhood, why not follow

in the footsteps of the famous five by visiting the iconic locations written within the

book such as Kirrin Castle, Corfe Castle, idealistic seaside town of Swanage, then

onto Brownsea Island, in Poole harbour which is accessible by ferry and then end

the day with an excursion onto Bournemouth located five miles from Poole harbour.

PG Wodehouse

PG Wodehouse inspired by Dorset's landscape

Love among the chickens:  Is a novel by Wodehouse and was first published in June

of 1906 and is the only novel to feature the recurring character of Stanley

Featherstonehaugh Ukridge who otherwise is confined to short stories. The plot

focuses on Jeremy Garnet who decides to leave London for a time to focus on his

next book, but is interrupted by the arrival of his friend Ukridge accompanied by

his wife Millie who then explains a business proposal involving producing hens’

eggs on a farm in Dorset and invite Garnet by enticing him of the idea of golf and

plenty of sea-bathing. Though somewhat bizarre, the novel effortlessly displays

the serene landscapes afforded by Dorset and transition to sandy beaches and

warm sunny days.  Wodehouse’s work has gained in popularity since his death,

and many of his works have been adapted for television and film and as of 2015,

his works are sited in the Oxford English Dictionary with over 1,700 quotes. Today,

his legacy is commemorated with a memorial stone in Westminster Abbey which

is open to the public. Additionally, if it is golf that you are fancying, Dorset offers great

golf courses throughout the area such as Isle of Purbeck, Lyme Regis, Remedy Oak

and Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club.

Thomas Edward Lawrence/Lawrence of Arabia

Thomas Edward Lawrence inspired by Dorset's landscape

T.E. Lawrence who is globally better known as Lawrence of Arabia (autobiography

written by Jeremy Wilson about Lawrence who helped lead the Arab Revolt against

the Ottoman empire during WWI), was a British archaeologist, army officer, diplomat

and writer. Lawrence published three major texts in his lifetime. The most significant

was his account of the Arab Revolt in Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Homer’s Odyssey and

The Forest Giant. Shortly after his military career ended, Lawrence settled by

Wareham, Dorset in a cottage named Clouds Hill. Shortly thereafter, he was fatally

injured in an accident on his Brough Superior (motorcycle) near his cottage and

died six days later. Today Lawrence is buried in the separate burial ground of

St. Nicholas’ Church, Moreton which is nestled in between Weymouth and Corfe

Castle and a short drive away to the sandy beaches of Bournemouth. Both where

he is interred as well as his cottage are open to the public and receive numerous

visitors throughout the year to pay their respects Lawrence who himself had a

prolific life with the accomplishments he garnered throughout his lifetime.

John Fowles

John Fowles inspired by Dorset's landscape

The French Lieutenant’s Woman:  Set in the mid-nineteenth century, the novel’s

protagonist Sarah Woodruff, lives in the coastal town of Lyme Regis as a disgraced

woman abandoned by a French ship’s officer who had returned to France and married.

This novel gained notoriety due to is writing structure. Though more popular now in

film and television, the book’s style of writing ends up bringing the reader into the

book as a character themselves with the possibility of the protagonist having

multiple endings. Again set in the historic Dorset area, this novel embodies the

simplicity of coastal/scenic living.

Mary Shelley

Mary Shelley inspired by Dorset's landscape

Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus:  Is a novel written by English author

Mary Shelley; which ultimately is what she is most known for through the numerous

adaptations her novel brought about through print, television and cinema.

Though she is most known for Frankenstein, Shelley was an accomplished author

with various other works that are now being given acclaim for her literary style.

She also edited and promoted the works of her husband, romantic poet and

philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley. Though not native or having lived in Dorset,

her son Sir Percy Florence Shelley, bought Boscombe Cottage, which he had

built in 1801 and intended to turn it into a home for his mother; unfortunately,

Mary died from a brain tumour in 1851 prior to the completion of the home.

Mary Shelley wanted to be buried with her parents, so her son had their coffins

exhumed and placed in a family plot at St. Peter’s Church in Bournemouth. An

interesting fact about Shelley, after her husband Percy Shelley died from drowning

and his body cremated, she decided to keep his heart in a silken shroud and it

is rumoured that she carried it with her nearly everywhere for years. Today you

can visited her burial site with the cemetery being open to the public and

afterwards can cross the street to eat, drink or dance at a pub named after her or

walk a few minutes further to reach Bournemouth beach and pier.

Whether taking a drive along the Jurassic Coast or opening a hen farm business,

what these famous writers all have in common are the portrayal of one of the best

areas of the UK that anyone would be thrilled to visit whether it be to have an

adventure, road-trip or have a holiday.

5 Top Tips for Wedding Showcase Visits

Newly engaged and wanting to start your perfect wedding planning?

Looking to attend a few wedding showcases but unsure of what to expect?

We have put together 5 top tips for you to help you

prepare for your first wedding showcase experience,

helping you gain more out of your visit.

STEP 1 – DO YOUR RESEARCH:

If you walk into a wedding show blind it can all get a little too much.
Always have a list of the aspects of your wedding you still need help
with to hand so you know exactly what you need to look for on the day.
To make it even easier, be sure to check the shows website a few weeks
before so you can find out who is exhibiting and what they offer, that
way you are able to make a list of all the tables you would like to see
and can go straight to them when you get there saving you loads of time
to ask the right questions and gather more information on venues suited
 to your needs only.
Some shows to offer maps either on or before the day, be sure to print
this out so you can map your path and make it easier to find the vendors
 you are looking for.

STEP 2 – PROVIDE YOUR OWN CARDS/ADDRESS LABELS:

No matter what you are enquiring about, all exhibitors you enquire with
will ask for the same details. If you have cards written out already it
saves you the hassle of having to write the same thing repeatedly.

Make sure to have the bride and grooms’ full names, email address,
mailing address and wedding date written out so you can just hand this
over to them when they ask.

STEP 3 – BRING A LARGE BAG :

You will need it to put all of the wedding information, brochures etc you
receive throughout the day in, along with the few goodies and chocolates
you may be able to pick up on the way round.

STEP 4 – BRING PEOPLE WITH YOU:

Whether it is your husband/wife to be, some family members or a few of
your close friends, it is always good to have someone with you for that
all important second opinion. They can be there to bounce of ideas with
or to help carry all you have collected. Its always good to have some
 extra support.

STEP 5 – FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT:

Because these are incredibly important. More often than not, the vendors
you meet at wedding shows will be the ones you keep in contact with,
should you decide to go ahead, all the way through to your big day so
how they welcome you and their body language is a good indication of the
service you will receive. Those who are smiley and friendly are often
the ones who will be the most reliable and supportive and will be
incredibly attentive making sure you are happy and you enjoy your big
 day.

Our Christmas & New Year Review 2017

We hope you have all had a good start to 2018!

As the hotel is currently closed for a little titivating, there is no time like the present to take
a look back at the festive holiday season and all the events and parties that took place at the Riv throughout December 2017.

Starting from Friday 24th November we welcomed a whole host of different groups: families, friends and companies for their Christmas parties, Christmas Lunches and Afternoon Teas. Our team served and
entertained over a whopping 4000 guests throughout the festive month.  With all the Christmas decorations
put up by our lovely staff and the function rooms transformed and ready for the month’s events, we opened
our doors and welcomed you all:

Christmas Parties Bournemouth

We witnessed an array of different Christmas party attire from those dressed to
impress in glamorous dresses and black tie to those in some spectacular fancy dress. Many even took advantage
of our photo booth experience to capture some hilarious selfies with friends, family or work colleagues.

Here is a selection of our favourite captured moments of Christmas parties in 2017:

Christmas Parties Bournemouth

Our popular Santa Sunday lunch was once again a great hit with the kids. Everyone
enjoyed their visit from Father Christmas… even the hotel staff:

Santa Sunday Bournemouth

We received some wonderful feedback on Facebook from one of the Santa Sunday lunch guests:

It’s always great to read such wonderful feedback 🙂

After the Christmas festivities, we saw the ringing in of the New Year with a disco and
bagpipes galore! We welcomed over 200 guests for a five course meal followed by an evening of entertainment and
a glass of bubbly at midnight. All seemed to go down a treat and the night was a huge success!

New Year Bournemouth

After a very busy festive period it was only fair that the hotel staff also got
to let their hair down and ring in the new year with fellow work colleagues, and that we did!!!

So from all of us here at the Riviera,  thank you to everyone
who came to see us and celebrate with us, we hope you all had a wonderful time
and look forward to welcoming you back to the Riviera in 2018.

PS – We’re not done yet! We still have some January Christmas Parties to go! If you’re joining us for a party this month, we hope you have a fantastic time!

If that is not enough, we have also given our Cunarder Restaurant
menu a summers touch with the addition of a few new tantalizingly tasty dishes. Take a look here.

Why not try our chefs new Crayfish and Saffron starter with Parmesan crisps
and baby tomatoes. Why not follow this with our Dressed Local Whole Crab served with a

served with chive butter baby jacket potatoes, asparagus and sun-blushed tomatoes.
And then for dessert, why not treat yourself to our Pimms, Elderflower and Blueberry Terrine Jelly
with a Pimm’s garnish, an explosion of fruity flavours.

We asked our Sous chef Petr to pick his favorite dish
from our new summer menu and to provide us with the recipe so you can make it at home:

Petr’s Classic Strawberry Trifle

1. Firstly to make the Custard, heat 600ml of Double Cream
and Vanilla ( 1 pod, seeds scraped) in a saucepan and bring to the boil.
2. Whisk together 4 large egg yolks, 1 tbsp of Cornflour and 2 tbsp of caster sugar in a bowl,
then pour in the hot vanilla cream.
3. Pour in to a clean pan and get over a low-medium heat for 5 to 6 minutes until thick and glossy.
4. Pass through a fine sieve in to a bowl and leave to cool.
5. Put 400g of strawberries (hulled and halved), 3 tblsp of caster sugar and 50ml of Harvey’s Sherry
in to a separate bowl to make the strawberry marinade, toss together and
leave in the fridge for 1 hr or so.

6. After and hour, spoon the strawberries in to the bottom of your dessert glass.
Add 320g of Trifle Sponges (or Victoria Sponge cases) and then pour your custard over the top.
7. Now for the finishing touches, whisk together some double cream and caster sugar
and then use a piping bag to pipe over the top of your dessert.
8. To serve, add some fresh chopped strawberries and a dribble of your strawberry
marinade for decoration.

Planning the perfect baby shower at a hotel

Trying to organise the perfect baby shower for yourself, a friend or relative but unsure on where to book?
We have put together our top tips for booking a baby shower at a hotel to help you on the path to baby shower planning success:

Why Hire A Hotel?

Hiring a hotel allows you to eat and drink from the finest of china, a selection of freshly cooked food made by someone else, leaving you without the hassle of having to do it all yourself.
Instead you are free to relax and enjoy the fun.

Most hotels allow you to bring decorations but do not expect you to decorate.
They are more than happy to do the decorating for you so you have more time to ready.
They may even be able to help with the arrangements, providing you with a selection of suppliers
they have used in the past that you could purchase your decorations, cake etc. from.

Many hotels also more than likely have private function rooms you can hire,
allowing you a level of intimacy you may not get in the main dining area.
You may find there is normally a room hire charge if you do not invite up to a certain amount of people
but it is always worth an ask.

The Riviera are very happy to pitch in and help decorate on the day if needed.
We will even provide you with the chair covers, table cloths, napkins and a selection of coloured sashes to choose from.
We cater for parties of all sizes – for 30 or more you can reserve the Britannic Suite exclusively
for the afternoon, or for smaller gatherings we can reserve you the Caledonia suite
with a view of the alum chine gardens and the ocean.

How do I pick a theme?:

Picking a theme for a baby shower can be a very strenuous and mind boggling task
so here are just a few ideas to help you on your way:

The most popular baby shower themes we have seen used are normally based on colour,
whether or not the baby is a boy or a girl.
This will decide whether or not the theme will be blue or pink.
However, what if you are unaware of the baby to be’s gender?
More often than not the mother and father to be have decided they would like this to be a surprise.
So how would you go about choosing a theme and decorations for your friends baby shower? Well here is just a few ideas to help you:

Match to the Nursery Décor: You may find although the parents to be do not know the gender of their baby they have still picked out their nursery décor.
You could match the baby shower colour theme and decorations to the nursery theme they have chosen.

Nature:  There are many different ideas for a nature theme that could be done which could include:Flowers, Clouds, Baby Animals etc.
They are all popular baby themes and are fun to do.
They could even be based on a particular favourite animal of both the mother and father to be and can be a good way of making a reluctant father to be feel involved too.
You could use an array of brightly coloured balloons or even get the supplier to shape them in to certain animals or flowers for you.
Why not try looking at Bournemouth balloons for some inspiration or ordering some beautiful flowers from By Arrangement Florist in Bournemouth.

A book themed baby shower: Celebrate the mom-to-be’s love of literature or a particular story book or movie
with a whimsical menu, darling decorations, and plenty of fairy-tale fun.

For example: if the mum to be is a Disney fan then why not have a mad hatter’s tea party!

Spa Baby Shower: Since the mother to be will have little time to spoil herself once the baby is born,
now is the perfect time to get her and all of her friends together and spoil them with a relaxing afternoon of pampering.
Why not treat the mum to be to a manicure or pedicure and an afternoon tea,
or let her relax and enjoy an Indian head massage or foot massage to help cure the aches and pains of carrying a baby.

Lori, our resident beauty therapist at the Riviera Hotel’s Unique Boutique
offers a selection of
spa packages and treatments to choose from all at reasonable prices.
You could even put your feet up in the hotels relaxation room while you wait for your treatments.

When should I send out the invitations?

Make sure to give invitations out a few weeks in advance.
Most hotels will ask for a deposit in order to confirm the booking,
the earlier you send out the invitations, the more sufficient time it gives each guest to get the money to you.
Always provide as much information on the invites as you possibly can but try not to sound too wordy,
or encourage guests to be able to contact you if they have any questions about directions to the location or gifts etc.

What should we eat and drink?

The food and drink at a baby shower need not be too elaborate.
A simple buffet with 5 or 6 options or an afternoon tea with a selection of
sandwiches and cakes will suffice and please all. It also makes it easier to choose and pre- order ahead of time
saving you so much hassle.

*TOP TIP* – make sure to check if anyone in your party has any allergies
or dietary requirements before ordering and let the venue know a few weeks before.

The Riviera provide afternoon tea packages for baby showers starting at just £9.95 per person
along with a variety of other options on our bar menu if an afternoon tea isn’t for you.

If your not wanting lunch and you would like a sit down meal instead,
our Cunarder Restaurant is also open for dinner
and offers an array of different options to choose from, sourced from local produce and cooked fresh.

What should I do for a cake?

Pre-ordering a cake is always the easiest option but it is best to make sure this is done in advance.
This gives enough time for the cake to be prepared and for you to go through with the baker
how you would like the cake to look.
Although the most convenient option, this can also be the most expensive.

Why not have a look at Cakes by Suzanne or Specialty Cakes website , cake makers located in Bournemouth.

You could try baking the cake yourself.
Not only is this a less costly option but it would also be heaps of fun.
You could use your creativity and even get your friends to help.
There are loads of recipes online or in cookery books that you could follow.

You don’t even have to have the classic baby shower cake and instead could mix it up with a selection of cupcakes in a stand.
You could even turn it into a game, bake lots of cupcakes and then get each of your guests to decorate their own cupcake at the shower.

What should we do for games?

Below are just a few games that could be played during a baby shower:

Diaper Derby: Split your guests in to two teams and hand each team a roll of toilet paper.
Give the teams a set amount of time to wrap one of their team members up in a mock diaper made from the toilet roll given.
The team with the most creatively diapered adult baby wins a prize.
This makes for some hilarious photos you will be sure to look back on and laugh at!

Place the baby on the mummy: Yep you’ve guessed it, this is a simple baby shower alternative to the classic game pin the tail on the donkey.
Blow up a picture of the mum to be with her baby bump on show.
Blind fold each guest and hand them a cut out picture of a baby.
Give them a little spin and then get them to pin the baby on the picture.
Whoever gets it closest to the tummy wins.
You could also play pin the dummy on the baby as an alternative.

Guess the baby food: Gather together a selection of unique baby food flavours, rip off the labels and number each top.
Then ask your guests to grab a spoon and sample each, writing down what they think the flavour is as they go.
The guest with the keenest taste buds wins a prize.

*Top Tip* Having a mixed shower in which dads are invited?
Why not mix the game up a bit, blindfold the ladies and get them to feed their gents the baby food.
The gents then guess the flavour.
This helps make the men part of the fun too.

Guess the baby: Why not get every guest of your baby shower to bring a picture of them as a baby with them.
Once you have collected all the pictures give them each a number.
Then get every guest to write down who they think each picture is of.
The person with the most correct answers wins a prize.

For example: can you guess which baby is which out of our six lovely staff members?

Blindfolded Diapering:  Have guests separate into teams.
Each teams gets a doll, blindfold and diapers.
Each guest must put the blindfold on, remove the current diaper and put a new one on the doll.
After the first team member does this, they give the doll to the next, until the entire team is finished.
The first team to finish wins.

Final Touches!

Well once all the above is complete and all who are coming have paid,
all that is left to do is to arrive at the hotel an hour early to bring any decorations and the cake.
You could also get guests to arrive early too if it is a surprise shower.
Then once all is in place it’s time for the guest of honour to arrive.
Now you can relax, mingle, eat, have some fun and take lots of pictures for the mum-to-be so she can remember just how amazing the baby shower you planned for her was 🙂
